Learn more about Ventana custom wooden surfboards.

This hollow-framed, wooden longboard is built to ride smooth and fast in Martijn and Marylinnany sized wave. It was created as a surprise wedding gift from Marilynn to her husband, Chris. It was unveiled at their wedding in Santa Cruz, California on September 28, 2019.

The top deck is made from salvaged redwood from the floorboards of the Schwan mansion built in Santa Cruz in the 1880s. The dark, double stringers are Doug fir from the hull of the Western Flyer, considered by many to be the most famous fishing boat in the world. John Steinbeck, Ed "Doc" Ricketts, and crew sailed this 77-foot sardine boat into the Sea of Cortez in Baja Western Flyer California, Mexico in 1940. The following year, Steinbeck published his book, The Log from the Sea of Cortez, about the adventure. Learn more about this amazing boat and our use of its wood. The light-colored stringers are bay laurel from Thamer Design. The pyrography (wood-burning) was created by Jessica Kendall-Bar. It has sentimental meaning to the newlyweds. Jessie burned the art into a spruce disc made of an offcut from Santa Cruz Guitar Company. The tail block is made of Western Flyer Doug fir and is inlayed with a sentimental pink ribbon and purfling from Santa Cruz Guitar Company. The leash and vent plug are made using quilted maple offcuts from Meier Brothers Furniture Design.

The bottom deck is made from redwood floorboards from the Schwan mansion and includes flame maple stringers from Meier Brothers Furniture. There are more than 760 wooden, precision-cut "fish scales" made of black walnut from Alessi working on the boardBrown Felicetta Designs; claro walnut, flame maple, and quilted maple from Meier Brothers Furniture Design, and mahogany from an office desk donated by Poke House. The tail block is inlayed with abalone. Jessica Kendall-Bar burned dates into the bottom that hold sentimental value for the couple.

The glassed-on single fin is made of salvaged redwood from the Santa Cruz Mountains. It features hand-cut, translucent "roots."

The rails are made of cork which is more resistant to dings. There are two sheets of Aerialite 4-ounce fiberglass on top and two on bottom. The epoxy is Entropy Super Sap 100 bio-resin which is up to 40% tree sap and is very strong and light.

As with all Ventana Surfboards, the interior is glassed and sealed, as well.

This board is hollow, lightweight and will ride as great as it looks. Given the uniqueness of each side, it's two art pieces in one. The display stand is made of solid mahogany from a Poke House table with cork padding and a quick release holder.

Made in Santa Cruz, California by master craftsman Martijn Stiphout.

Includes an aluminum, museum-quality 5"x7" display sign and a handmade bag by Sagebrush Board Bags created using coffee bean sacks and unique, remnant fabrics, and a Ventana Save-A-Surf box with two, custom made, brass vent plugs.
