This double concave, glossy, fish-shaped, bodysurfing handplane was created entirely of Douglas fir from the hull of the Western Flyer boat that John Steinbeck and "Doc" Ricketts sailed into the Sea of Cortez in 1940. Steinbeck wrote the acclaimed book The Log from Sea of Cortez about the trip. We filled the square nail holes in the wood with brass using a double top secret process. And, we've glassed in a special version of our logo that is reserved only for products that contain wood from the Western Flyer. The nail holes in the hull wood are filled with Entropy Resins and gold-colored Black Diamond Pigments.

This handplane was glassed using Entropy Super Sap Epoxy and EcoPoxy, a bio-resin which is made using a base of tree sap. The 4 ounce sheet of fiberglass is from Aerialite Surf Glass. The hand strap is nylon, reclaimed, and adjustable. It is covered with off cuts from Buell Wetsuits, and the wood is shaped with our unique, ergonomic hand fit. The hardware is solid brass.

As with all Ventana handplanes, this one floats so you can easily pass it between friends in the waves.

This handplane comes with a cinch bag from Sagebrush Board Bags made from reclaimed coffee sacks and remnant materials.

You only need a single handplane on your leading arm for a great ride every time! This is a terrific conversation piece in your home and will slice you across the face of any sized surf.

Handmade in Santa Cruz, California and designed by master craftsman Martijn Stiphout

Dimensions: 12" x 8" x 3/4“
