The stunning redwood top and bottom decks are made from the floorboards of the historic Schwan Mansion in Santa Cruz, California. The Victorian-style house was built of locally milled, old growth wood in the late 1800's, and this clear grain, heart redwood floorboards served the residents all the way through the early 2000's when the house was torn down. The wood is at least one thousand years old. The board was commissioned by the owner of the house that now stands on the Schwan Mansion site. The floorboards are coming "home' in the form of a Ventana surfboard.
The top deck has an inlay inspired by Mexican design elements and incorporates Indian rosewood and spruce offcuts from the luthiers at our upcycle partner, Santa Cruz Guitar Company. This legendary company has been making exceptional, acoustic guitars for the likes of Johnny Cash, Ben Harper, Elvis Costello, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Buffet, and hundreds of others since 1976.
The sun rays rising over the water on the bottom deck are of redwood from the Schwann mansion and Douglas fir reclaimed from an old house in Capitola, CA. The "water" is mahogany from a cabinet shop. The "sun" is an unknown species of burl wood found in Big Sur, California.
The rails are made of U.S grown oak cork, and it was glassed with Entropy Super Sap 100 Bio Resin and 4oz. fiberglass cloth (two layers on top and one on bottom). As with all Ventana boards, the interior is glassed and sealed, as well.
Made in Santa Cruz, California by master craftsman Martijn Stiphout.
