Learn about our surfboards and custom orders!
This stunning, custom board was created in honor of our upcycle partnership with Mission Bell Reclaimed. This shape harkens back to an original Lightning Bolt shape created by Jack Shipley and Gerry Lopez.
The sun rays, water and top deck are from Mission Bell's stock of reclaimed Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk wood. The boardwalk was originally built in 1907, and the redwood was used as beams, boards and pilings. The Douglas fir was used as beams and boards. Both are a mix of dark, rustic browns. Over a century of sun, smiles, and sea breeze resonate in the wood.
The multi-colored sun is made from a very special piece of Douglas fir from the hull of the Western Flyer, considered by many to be the most famous fishing boat in the world. John Steinbeck, Ed "Doc" Ricketts and crew sailed this 77-foot sardine boat into the Sea of Cortez in Baja California, Mexico in 1940. The following year, Steinbeck published his book, The Log from the Sea of Cortez, about the adventure. Learn more about this amazing boat and Ventana's use of its wood.
The integrated leash cup and vent plug is made of flame mahogany from the Santa Cruz Guitar Company's offcuts with a dot of abalone added under the leash bar.
The glassed-on single fin incorporates a butcher block design and is also made from Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk redwood from Mission Bell.
The rails are made of cork which is more resistant to dings, and there are two sheets of 4 ounce fiberglass on top and one on bottom. The epoxy is Entropy Super Sap 100 bio-resin which is up to 40% tree sap and is very strong and light.
All nail holes and knots from the reclaimed boards have been filled with brass using a secret process.
As with all Ventana Surfboards, the interior is glassed and sealed, as well.
This board is hollow, lightweight and will ride as great as it looks. Given the uniqueness of each side, it's like two art pieces in one.
Made in Santa Cruz, California by master craftsman Martijn Stiphout.
