Learn more about Ventana custom wooden surfboards.

This stunning, custom board was created for Greg Ranieri, who will be surfing it at his home breaks on the shores of New Jersey. The tail block and stringers were inspired by Greg's very first surfboard in 1963, a brand-new Morey Pope Peck Penetrator. It was a 10' board with dual redwood stringers and red nose and tail blocks.

The sun rays are crafted from reclaimed redwood from a historic home in Santa Cruz. The light wood representing water is Douglas fir from a cabinet shop.

The top deck is redwood from a salvaged hot tub with a unique stringer made of spruce and Indian rosewood from the Santa Cruz Guitar Company's offcuts. The four accent stringers are from guitar spruce, as well.

Western FlyerThe multi-colored sun and tail block are made from a very special piece of Douglas fir from the hull of the Western Flyer, considered by many to be the most famous fishing boat in the world. John Steinbeck, Ed "Doc" Ricketts and crew sailed this 77-foot sardine boat into the Sea of Cortez in Baja California, Mexico in 1940. The following year, Steinbeck published his book, The Log from the Sea of Cortez, about the adventure. Learn more about this amazing boat and Ventana's use of its wood.

The top side of the tail block is accented with purfling offcuts from a guitar face from the Santa Cruz Guitar Company; the bottom is accented with abalone inlay.Santa Cruz Guitar Company

The glassed-on single fin incorporates tree roots that are translucent through redwood burl driftwood which was collected from Seacliff State Beach in Aptos, California after an El Niño storm. The beach is down the street from the Ventana workshop where this board was handcrafted.

The rails are made of cork which is more resistant to dings, and there are two sheets of 4-ounce fiberglass on top and one on bottom. The epoxy is Entropy Super Sap 100 bio-resin which is up to 40% tree sap and is very strong and light.

All nail holes from the reclaimed boards have been filled with brass using a secret process.

As with all Ventana Surfboards, the interior is glassed and sealed, as well.

This board is hollow, lightweight and will ride as great as it looks. Given the uniqueness of each side, it's like two art pieces in one.
